Re:Nylon

Nylon has been a major material for Prada. The brand's '84 debut of Pocone nylon in its bags and accessory line won the world's attention, and Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her eponymous label and Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, hypebeast-ready line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The Milan-based powerhouse has transformed its iconic nylon bags into sustainable recycled nylon fabrics. The new collection includes six classic designs - a belt bag (pictured) and shoulder bags (pictured), bags for totes (pictured) and duffle bags (pictured), and two backpacks - in repurposed ECONYL fabrics that are made from recycled plastics and fishing nets.

The repurposed material is the result of a partnership with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn manufacturer which produces Econyl fabric out of recycled nylon waste, which can be reused over and over again without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed fabric is part of a larger plan to change the entire Prada portfolio from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. In addition to the six new Re:Nylon bags, the line also includes a pair shoes and boots made from recycled ECONYL as well as various apparel items made of the same fabric.

Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", a video series that highlights the innovative method used to create Re:Nylon bags. The first video features Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility that turns old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.

With the shift to re:Nylon Prada is undergoing its biggest reduction in virgin nylon use yet, saving the company 70,000 barrels of oil each year, The Business of Fashion reports. Additionally, the change will reduce the company's emissions by an estimated 57,000 tons. The label has just gone fur-free on its clothing and accessories. This is the latest sustainability initiative.

Recycled nylon

Recycled nylon has its disadvantages. It's not biodegradable and can remain for a long time in landfills or the oceans until it is broken into smaller particles which can cause harm to wildlife. It is also not breathable and may shed microplastics when washed. However, it uses 50 percent less energy to make compared to regular virgin nylon and is more durable than other bag fabrics like cotton or wool.

The fabric is recycled plastics and petroleum, that is made from fossil fuels. This reduces both the need for more natural resources as well as the carbon emissions from the production of virgin nylon. It is also much easier than other bag materials to handle because it doesn't have to be dyed or woven. This makes it a great option for bags that are used often, such as yoga or gym equipment.

In addition to its environmental advantages recycled nylon is a stronger and more flexible fabric than conventional cotton or polyester. It's also able to withstand a lot of abuse and is therefore ideal for backpacks and other outdoor equipment.  prada bag for woman  is lightweight and easily shaped and stitched to the desired shape of the backpack. Nylon is also a great choice for outdoor gear as it is water-resistant, and it doesn't absorb mildew or odors as easily as other fabrics.

When choosing bags that are environmentally sustainable, look for Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certification. This certification tests for chemical residues, aswell in ensuring environmental and social responsibility. Look for brands with this certification since they are more likely to be more transparent and accountable when it comes to their products.

Patagonia, for example, offers a range of yoga equipment and backpacks made from recycled nylon called Econyl. This nylon is made in a closed-loop process that requires 50% less energy than regular virgin nylon. The brand also supports organizations which are dedicated to protecting our planet.
